November ushers in the beginning of the busy holiday season filled with family and friends. But did you know November is also Long Term Care Awareness Month?

As family and friends gather during the holidays to share food, laughter, and memories, it’s an important time to talk about the future while you’re together in one room. Long Term Care Awareness Month helps draw attention to the important conversations families should have about planning for the future and long term care needs.

Here’s what you need to know about Long Term Care Awareness Month and the tools or resources available to help you have the conversation with family.

How Did November Become Long Term Care Awareness Month?

It started back in 1991 with Jesse Slome of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. He created the month to increase awareness of the issue of long term care and draw attention to what families are facing. The month received Congressional recognition and has been declared by several Governors and Mayors as an important month to be remembered.

What Is Long Term Care Awareness Month?

Keep in mind, it’s not a month dedicated to the awareness of long term care insurance. There’s a lot more to long term care than just the financial side. The issue of long term care affects families financially, emotionally, physically, and mentally – and many fail to realize the extent of this until it happens to them.

Long Term Care Awareness Month is about educating the public on the importance of long term care planning and encouraging families to start the conversation early rather than waiting until it’s too late.
