9 Tips for Caregivers to Thrive

Being a caregiver can be hard work. A caregiver’s role is incredibly valuable and often misunderstood. Use these tips to take care of yourself and thrive in your caregiving role.

1. Get Support from Other Caregivers

It’s important to understand you’re not alone. Don’t be afraid to reach out for support from those who have been there.

2. Take Care of Your Health

You can’t care for someone else well if your own health suffers. Make time for adequate exercise, drink lots of water, and eat nutritious foods.

3. Accept Help from People Around You

You don’t have to do it all alone. If someone offers to pick up groceries, take the individual to an appointment, or clean the house – let them. It takes a community to care!

4. Be Open to New Technologies

Innovative technologies are making it easier to monitor daily activities, medication management, and more. Keep up-to-date with apps and other technologies which can help make your caregiving job easier.

5. Watch for Signs of Depression

If the blues hang out longer than usual, it may be a sign of depression. Watch for common signs and don’t be afraid to get the help you need early.

6. Take Breaks Often

Remind yourself daily that you deserve a break. Take breaks throughout the day to go for a walk, recharge, and grab a bit to eat.

7. Learn How to Communicate with Doctors

It’s ok to ask a doctor to clarify if you don’t understand a diagnosis or health care needs for an individual. Do research on your own too, so you feel confident next time you meet with doctors.

8. Keep Medical Information Organized

New apps and technology can help you take daily notes on the health of an individual and be aware if something changes. Organize your notes in an app or journal and keep all medical information provided by the doctor in a specific file or location for safe keeping.

9. Give Yourself Credit – You’re Doing the Best You Can!

Remember that you’re making a difference in someone’s life every day. You won’t do everything perfectly, but your big and little efforts matter. While thanks and praises may be few and far between, you are making someone’s life better and brighter during a challenging time.
